Benefits of Parent + Child Journals
Share
In the digital age, where screens dominate the attention of both parents and children, there's something deeply intimate and timeless about the act of sharing a physical journal. Beyond just a record of memories, a shared journal between parent and child can be a powerful tool for fostering connection, communication, and personal growth in your relationship.
Sharing a journal with your child creates a safe space for them to unload worries, express and work through emotions and ask questions that they may be too shy, or embarrassed to bring up face to face. It also gives us, the parents, the gift of time to digest what our children share or ask and respond in a way that is helpful and empathetic. There have been so many times (regrettably) my daughters have shared something with me and I immediately dive into speech mode. This usually ends in both of us feeling frustrated. Sharing a journal has taught us how to best respond to one another in a way that drives understanding and strengthens our communication. With better understanding of each other, our connection outside of the journals has improved because we've worked to build a relationship built on trust and empathy.
With our journals, we encourage all parents to get off on the right foot by following 4 simple steps:
Set your intentions. Let your child know what you hope to get out of sharing a journal with them.
Determine if you want to create a routine. How often do you want to write to one another? Where is the journal stored, etc.
Be authentic. This is not the space for judgement or criticism. Acknowledge your child's feelings and don't be afraid to share your own. Vulnerability can get you a long way when it comes to building mutual trust and respect.
Respect boundaries. None of your child's entries should be shared with anyone else unless they have given their permission. Focus on building a safe space for them both in the journal and with you.
However, sharing a journal with your child does not have to just be about big feelings. It can be a sweet reminder of cherished memories, inside jokes, family recipes or more. If done correctly, this keepsake can be something that can be a resource for them through childhood, adulthood and even in their own parenting journey.
